BLACK HISTORY MONTH AT MARQUIS

142 years after Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address declaring that “all men are created equal”, “the unfinished work” began with the abolition of slavery, and continues with the celebration of Black History Month. Established by Dr. Carter G. Woodson before the study of black history had really even begun, the tradition of celebrating Black History in February originated in 1926.

To celebrate Black History Month in music, Marquis brings to you the music of R. Nathaniel Dett, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor
, Dione Taylor and Molly Johnson.

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor
24 Negro Melodies, Op.59

featuring Frances Walker
Listen: Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child
The transcription of melodies contained in this volume is the most complete expression of Mr. Coleridge-Taylor's native bent and power. Using some of the native songs of Africa and the West Indies with songs that came into being in America during slavery, he has preserved their distinctive traits and individuality, at the same time giving them an art form fully imbued with their essential spirit.

Dione Taylor
I Love Being Here With You
Listen: He's Funny That Way
Songstress Dione Taylor has emerged as a fully-formed and exciting young artist. While unmistakably a jazz album, the CD reflects Dione Taylor's love of, and background in gospel, rhythm & blues and soul. Her rich and smoky voice has a truly soulful quality, one attractively complemented by her keenly trained musical ear.
"Dione Taylor is one of the brightest young stars on the Canadian music scene. She is the total package! She has the looks, the voice and the musical experience to make a huge impact on the music industry."

Molly Johnson
Molly Johnson

Listen: My Oh My
"Molly Johnson is in great form on this disc...with her rich blend of blues and jazz confidently displayed. Flashes of Dinah Washington, Janis Joplin and Billie Holliday (whose "Don't Explain" is a treat here) colour the naturally warm textures of her voice...She's full of drama wit and heartache...surely one of the records of the year."
- Geoff Chapman, Toronto Star

Another Day
