The Sonata for Cello & Piano Op. 119 is one of Russia's greatest works for cello, and one of Prokofiev's most popular late works. The sonata is in three movements, the first and third expressing a calm, lyrical mood; and the second, a youthful, carefree lightness.
Also featured is David Ward-Steinman's lyrical "Duo for Cello & Piano", the chamber version of the "Concerto for Cello and Orchestra".

EDGAR LUSTGARTEN, a pupil and later assistant of the celebrated cellist Emanuel Feuerman, was a member of the NBC Symphony when Arturo Toscanini conducted it. Mr. Lustgarten has been principal cellist of the St. Louis Symphony, cellist with the NBC Quartet, the Mischakoff Quartet, and Pacific Arts Trio. He presented the world premiere of the Ward-Steinman Cello Concerto with the Tokyo Philharmonic.
JOHN WILLIAMS was born in New York in 1932. He studied at the University of California in Los Angeles and In New York at the Julliard School of Music with Rosina Lhevinnne. During the 1950s he was active as a jazz pianist and composer and performed in concerts and in many recordings with most of America's leading jazz artists. He has composed many jazz-oriented works as well as music of a more serious nature.
John Williams has also composed scores and acted as Musical Director for approximately thirty major films, including Robert Altman's "Images"
and "Fiddler on the Roof".
